Oolite limestone
Oolite is a sedimentary rock, most often limestone, composed of smoothly laminated, spherical to ellipsoidal coated grains that are cemented together ( Figure O16 ). The grain components of oolite are called ooids (or öoids or ooliths ), terms derived from the Greek word for fish roe (“oon”), which ooids resemble. Oolite. Oolite is one of the most unique-looking varieties of limestone. It looks like many small, round pellets cemented together. These pellets, called ‘ooids’, are formed when calcite precipitates out of water directly onto grains (usually silica) and grow in high-energy environments.
